In 1984, an interpreter who spoke both English and Afrikaans was stationed at Kiziba Camp.
He proceeded to accompany the interrogator while he proceeded to interrogate four British prisoners to find out who among them was responsible for getting the MPLA oilfield rights, as the interrogator himself did not speak English and the British POWs did not speak Afrikaans. Although he was assigned to aid in the interrogation process against the Viscount and his compatriots, the interpreter himself did not actually know where the Viscount was located.
Behind the scenes
The Afrikaner Interpreter is a key character in Mission 14: Lingua Franca of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. If the player decides to fulton recover him first, he will relay the locations of the various prisoners, with Kazuhira Miller also expressing displeasure at Venom Snake for prematurely fultoning him before acknowledging that they can at least get the information out of him. He later reported that he cannot actually get the intel out of him since he doesn't even know where the Viscount was located, just when the interrogation was to happen. Recruiting him is recommended by Miller and Ocelot and also allows the player to be able to understand Afrikaans. Identifying the interpreter was also one of the mission tasks.
