MG1 antenna

A radio antenna.

An antenna (or aerial) is an electrical device which converts electric power into radio waves, and vice versa. It is usually used with a radio transmitter or radio receiver. In transmission, a radio transmitter supplies an oscillating radio frequency electric current to the antenna's terminals, and the antenna radiates the energy from the current as electromagnetic waves (radio waves). In reception, an antenna intercepts some of the power of an electromagnetic wave in order to produce a tiny voltage at its terminals, that is applied to a receiver to be amplified.

Outer Heaven Uprising

Main article: Outer Heaven Uprising

During the Outer Heaven Uprising in 1995, Solid Snake was forced to procure a specific antenna, in order to bypass radio jamming that had been set up in Building 2 of the enemy fortress. Shortly after acquiring it, Snake was contacted by his commanding officer, Big Boss, who had managed to get through to him.

Behind the scenes

"You can send and receive communications using the antenna, even when you are in an enemy jamming area"
―Antenna description in Metal Gear

The antenna is an item that can be procured in Metal Gear. Upon finding and gaining it, Big Boss will contact the player and mention a jamming field that was in place that had cleared up.

It later reappeared with a similar role in the non-canon sequel to Metal Gear, Snake's Revenge, although it was instead found within the final area of the enemy base.
