An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. A rifle of this type is designed to engage targets at medium range, while still being useful up close.
Single shots allow high accuracy and economical use of rifle rounds. Fully automatic fire uses up a lot of rounds, but the user can attack more targets with less accuracy (known as "spray and pray"). The three shot burst feature on assault rifles such as the FAMAS is a compromise between the two.

Behind the scenes
The term assault rifle originates with the German StG 44, which is also known as the MP 43 and MP 44. Introduced late in World War II, "StG" was an abbreviation for Sturmgewehr (literally "assault rifle"). The term's modern use originated in 1994 in the United States Congress, when discussing the issue of gun control.
