They were capable of dividing into cold and hot regional types, with both variants supporting a variable-camouflage system with internal heat and luminous sensors. It also worked in conjunction with a camouflage screen composed of a polyesther shield with few radar reflection ratio. As such, it was colloquially named the "Chameleon Suit" because the variable-camouflage system changed colors and patterns in a similar manner to a chameleon and assimilates it into the surrounding. Below are the patterns it could undertake, with the chameleon color changing for the corresponding setting:

Behind the scenes
In the manual for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, it erroneously stated that the first two 30% categories for the Red Desert camo pattern was Forest Green and White, instead of Earth Red and Earth Yellow.
