Boss was a title given to America's greatest and most influential soldier. The Boss gained the title due to her achievements in WWII, most notably on her participation in the D-Day Landings in Normandy, in which her son was born. Naked Snake gained the title Big Boss after defeating The Boss. Liquid Snake was also called "boss" by the other members of FOXHOUND during the Shadow Moses Incident, but this was more likely because he was acting as the commander during the operation.

Codename given to Naked Snake and his subsequent sons. Naked Snake was given this codename as a reference to The Boss' Cobra Unit.

Solid Snake and Liquid Snake were given their names as a reference to their father, Naked Snake, and as a reference to the fact that they were opposites to one another. Solidus Snake was given his code name due to him being the perfect clone of Big Boss (Solidus being the point when a substance is neither Solid nor Liquid).

Raiden was given the title Snake briefly by the Patriots as they were trying to fashion him into the next Solid Snake (see S3 Plan for more details).

[edit] La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo

Codename for The Patriots. By the time of MGS2, nanomachines had become widely available and the patriots were able to use them to censor out their name and replace it with La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo. During Operation Snake Eater, Snake was given the passphrase "Who are the Patriots?" to identify Adam with by Major Zero. The answer being "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo".

This was the codename given to the greatest soldier in FOXHOUND, Gray Fox. Roy Campbell was also awarded the title, Chicken Fox, as a joke because he was afraid of actual field combat and preferred to stay behind as a tactician.

[edit] ADAM and EVA

Originally the codenames of two NSA codebreakers that defected to the Soviet Union. They were supposed to meet with Naked Snake to help him during Operation Snake Eater. However neither of them show up, allowing a Chinese Spy to use the EVA codename to fool Snake. It was later revealed that Ocelot is ADAM.

[edit] Major Zero/Major Tom

For the Virtuous Mission Snake's Commanding Officer, Major Zero, chose to use the Codename Major Tom as he thought Tom was the name of the tunnel used to escape in The Great Escape. However after the mission the Major discovered that the tunnel was one of the ones that was discovered. He therefore decided to change his codename back to Major Zero.

Variations of this were used by Revolver Ocelot such as Major Ocelot and Liquid Ocelot. Originally, it was also used by his soldiers, the Ocelot Unit.

[edit] Rat Patrol 01 (RAT PT 01)

Name of an elite military group led by Meryl Silverburgh group sent in to investigate Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection. It is later pointed out by Drebin that the letters RAT PT 01 (the common abbreviation for the unit's name) can be rearranged to spell "PATR1OT", revealing that they were unknowingly working for The Patriots, like Drebin (although he knew he was working for them).
