The Déjà Vu mission was an operation conducted by the Militaires Sans Frontières on July 13, 19XX, in which Big Boss infiltrated a U.S. Naval prison facility in Cuba. Big Boss's objective was to recreate the "strangely familiar" scenes shown in some mysterious photographs that had come into MSF's possession.

At 00:01, Big Boss had arrived at the facility, and was informed by Kazuhira Miller that the photographs had been uploaded to his iDroid. Big Boss then used the photographs as clues to find the locations they showed and recreate the scenes they depicted: collecting an item while avoiding searchlights on a helipad; seeing a grounded chopper being overlooked by two soldiers; driving a jeep around the base; blowing up an APC with a soldier inside by throwing grenades into the cockpit; locating a surveillance camera; finding a Moai statue; and initiating a power blackout by shutting down a generator, which caused a levitating gas-masked figure to appear. After recreating the seven scenes, Big Boss escaped the facility via a ventilation duct, and ended up having to take a quiz.

Behind the scenes

Déjà Vu is an Extra Ops mission that was initially exclusive for the PlayStation versions of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. It was later patched into the Xbox versions on May 1, 2014.[1] It is unlocked by collecting all the XOF patches in the main game. Déjà vu (French for "already seen") refers to the phenomenon of having the strong sensation that something currently being experienced has been experienced before in the past, regardless if it has actually happened or not.

Although some missions (notably Eliminate the Renegade Threat and Classified Intel Acquisition) can optionally have the player leave the base without using the Hind, Déjà Vu is the only mission of the seven (including its counterpart, Jamais Vu) where the player cannot be extracted via Hind to complete the mission, although they can summon it to spray off the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker logo for a trial completion, as well as use it for extracting captured personnel. On a related note, like the two side ops mentioned above, this mission also features two post-credits debriefings the player can access depending on how they complete the mission, not counting the end-game quiz the player needs to take. Specifically, if the player manages to complete the mission without recreating every scene (as high as six and as low as one), Miller will call an unknown contact stating that Big Boss has completed his mission, before confirming that Big Boss hasn't found all of the scenes. If the player manages to not only complete the mission after recreating every scene, but also passes the end-game quiz, Miller will comment that the player lives up to the legend and compliments him. Both times, Miller mimicks Ocelot.

If the player calls Miller while looking at the prisoner at Camp Omega and the prisoner in the Admin Building's basement via the binoculars, Miller will say "Wait a second..." and "That man..."

The cassette tape "Déjà Vu" can be found on one of the rocks near the shore. It is found in the same place with its equivalent mission, Jamais Vu. The tape contains two songs: "Resurgence" from Metal Gear Solid, and "Theme of Tara" from Metal Gear.

Besides the aforementioned scenes that the player has to recreate from the original Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation, there are many other references to the game and other entries:

  • Attempting to rescue the prisoners at Camp Omega and the boiler room in the admin building will result in the prisoners standing up and then collapsing dead to the ground after shouting "FOXDIE!".[2][3] Upon finding both prisoners, Big Boss will end up "infected" with FOXDIE, causing the screen to glitch up and give off several psychedelic colorings before being "rebooted" by the Fox Engine, with Kazuhira Miller thanking the engine afterwards after checking up on Snake.[4] If the player is playing with the Classic Snake skin, the prisoners will appear as Donald Anderson and Kenneth Baker, respectively.
    • On a related note, this also makes it the only mission where enemy combatants are present and yet cannot actually be rescued by the player.
  • The FOXHOUND logo will replace the flags on the base. Calling Miller upon seeing the flags will make him state "A fox?"
  • Miller will comment on the base being Shadow Moses Island before laughing and saying "or... not."[5]
  • Nearing the end, Miller will comment that the mice in the vent are not Alaskan field mice, with Big Boss asking "Master" if he's all right.[6]
  • The "quiz" segment has various characters (Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot) uttering quotes from the game, either direct quotes or paraphrases to fit the context.
  • The "post-credits" segment has the original Metal Gear Solid logo.
  • Completing the endgame quiz with a perfect score on Normal and Hard difficulties will unlock the Classic Snake and Cyborg Ninja skins, respectively. In addition, playing with either of the skins will result in the various characters being redesigned to more closely resemble characters from Metal Gear Solid (specifically, the United States Marines as the Genome Soldiers, the prisoner in Camp Omega as Donald Anderson, and the prisoner in the admin building's boiler room as Kenneth Baker).
    • In addition, wearing the Cyborg Ninja skin will give Snake the same sprinting properties as Raiden in the Jamais Vu mission, increasing his sprint speed and knocking down enemies hit by the sprint.
  • In the beginning of the game, after Big Boss removes his night vision goggles, the screen will briefly freeze and show the "press options button" or "press start button." Doing so will result in a brief flash of the original main menu for Metal Gear Solid. In addition, Big Boss will occasionally flash into "Classic Snake" before starting the mission, with it ending with a recreation of the title scene that appeared when Solid Snake ascended the elevator to the heliport area of Shadow Moses.
  • Big Boss does not have any weapons when starting the level.
  • Wolfdogs can be heard howling in the level.
  • When passing by one of the port-a-johns near Camp Omega, Johnny Sasaki can be heard groaning, due to having diarrhea. Miller will call in and state to leave him be.[7] If the player calls Miller while looking at the port-a-johns, Miller will wonder whether Johnny's in there and then dismisses the thought.[8]
  • When accessing the photographs in the mission objectives, when Miller realizes he forgot to upload the final one, he initially suggested to Snake to look "on the back of the case," which is what Baker told Snake regarding finding Meryl Silverburgh's Codec frequency.[9] Similar to the hint at Meryl's frequency, the Hideo blackout visual is also seen on the back of the box and in the online manual. If the player accesses the last photograph again, Miller will say "Darkness... Like some kind of "blackout"..."
  • Crawling through the drainage ditch outside the Admin Building will have Kazuhira Miller and Big Boss re-enact Master Miller and Solid Snake's respective lines in Miller's first appearance in the game, when Snake is crawling through a ventilation shaft.[10]
  • When stealing a jeep, Miller can be heard imitating Meryl's line "all right, keys!", the line she used when trying to escape via the emergency tunnel with Snake from the then-upcoming bombardment of Shadow Moses.
  • When walking near a mine field, the Codec call can be heard and Miller will imitate the Cyborg Ninja's line "Be careful - there are directional mines around there. Who am I? One of your fans."
  • When calling Miller on the radio, he will imitate Psycho Mantis' line, "So you like adventure games. I can read you like an open book."
  • When calling Miller on the radio after recreating a scene, he will ask Big Boss if he needs to save. He will then remember that the game uses an autosave feature.[11]
  • When calling Miller on the radio while the player is playing with the "Classic Snake" or "Gray Fox" skins, Miller will express shock about snow in Cuba, but then says that it "must be the SNOW-9 pollen", a reference to Snatcher.[12]
  • After witnessing the Hind with soldiers nearby, Big Boss/Snake can be heard saying "Just like old times...", alluding to Old Snake mimicking an action from Metal Gear Solid in Twin Suns from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
    • Similarly, near Camp Omega, the player can crawl under a truck to retrieve a discarded firearm, similar to how Old Snake retrieved a firearm in the same act of the same game.
  • When Big Boss enters the admin building from the door next to the security camera, Miller will ask him "what's the security level of your card?". He will then realize that he doesn't have a card.[13]
  • The opening narrative for the mission was taken directly from the user's manual for Metal Gear Solid.[14]
  • The alert theme "Resurgence" will play if an alert is triggered.
  • The mission failed screen will play the same music from Metal Gear Solid.
  • One of Metal Gear Solid's background themes will play when Big Boss enters the admin building.
  • The endgame quiz has ten questions (not counting finishing Liquid's "FOX... DIE...!" line) that test the player on their knowledge of the original Metal Gear Solid.
    • In addition, Miller will quote several lines while mimicking various characters throughout the quiz throughout the quiz. Specifically:
      • At the beginning, Miller, while mimicking Liquid, will yell "Not yet, Snake! It's not over yet!", alluding to what Liquid says when pursuing Snake and Meryl in the remaining jeep while evacuating Shadow Moses in the climax of the game;
      • Miller, while mimicking Roy Campbell, says "This is not Master Miller", referring to Roy Campbell's failed attempt at warning Snake to not activate Metal Gear after discovering that Miller had been replaced before the mission and that he was an enemy spy posing as him;
      • Miller, shortly after the above exchange, will then say "Snake, you're too late!" and "It's me, dear brother!", alluding to Miller, or rather, Liquid's retort to Roy Campbell in the above line, and what he says shortly before revealing his true identity to Snake;
      • Miller, after telling Snake the real method of completing the mission, will state "You didn't think you got here all by yourself, didn't you?" and "But you'll have to figure out the rest of this riddle yourself" while mimicking Liquid and Vulcan Raven, respectively, alluding to what Liquid reveals when confronting Solid Snake at REX, and what Vulcan Raven says after giving his hint to Solid Snake shortly after being bested in battle respectively;
      • When explaining the rules, or more specifically, what happens if a player gets a question wrong, Miller, while mimicking Ocelot, will state that "there are no continues, my friend" as well as warning the player to "not even think of looking the answers online or I'll know," referring to what Ocelot says when warning Snake about what will happen if the latter gets killed during a torture session, as well as a paraphrase of what Ocelot warns the player about the auto-fire button on the PSX controller;
      • If the player chooses not to take the quiz, Miller will say "See you later, brother", referring to what Liquid says when leaving the torture room.
      • When starting the quiz, Miller yells "Snaaake!", referring to what Liquid frequently yells when defeated (alluding to his hatred of his brother);
      • When getting three questions correct, Miller will say "You're pretty good!", which is Ocelot's catchphrase.
      • When nearing the end of the quiz, Miller will say "You have a good memory", and then saying in a gruff voice "If you think you can get the answer out of me, forget it! There isn't even any sodium pentathol here!", the latter referring to what Roy Campbell stated regarding wishing he could avoid the "rough stuff" regarding his interrogation of Naomi Hunter after the latter was suspected of being a spy;
      • When getting to the final question, Miller in Liquid's voice, will say "Let's finish this. Have at you Snake!", referring to what Liquid says at the start of their fight on REX;
      • In playthroughs of the quiz after unlocking the bonus, Miller, after pointing out that there are no more special bonuses, and while channeling Liquid, will say "Why are you here, then? Why do you continue to answer questions when your memory betrays you? You enjoy taking quizzes, that's why." a paraphrase of what Liquid says to Solid Snake atop REX when accusing the latter of enjoying killing people as being his motive for taking the mission;
      • In the post-credits scene for the mission after fully completing the quiz, Miller will say while mimicking Ocelot, "So the man does live up to the legend. You're pretty good. Just what I'd expect from the man who has the same code as the boss", alluding to what Ocelot says if the player manages to best Ocelot with little if any continues.
  • If the player managed to "erase" all the Metal Gear main-series logos save for one, Miller will comment that they completed it before he, quoting Liquid Snake, says "Not yet, Snake! It's not over yet!"
  • After unlocking the "Classic Snake" skin, the "Hideo blackout" screen will appear on the main menu and Big Boss will then change into "Classic Snake."

If the player completes the mission on Normal for the first time, Kazuhira Miller will mention when stating that the quiz is necessary to completing the mission that he'll throw in a special bonus if the player manages to complete the quiz, and upon the completion of the quiz, Miller will state the bonus will be given later. He says the same thing on Hard difficulty.

Two of the armories outside of the base have a black logo which says "Kojima Productions" and "Kojima Productions LA," but are otherwise blank. When near the first one, Miller will call in and question what the term "Kojima Productions" means, and think there has to be a reason there.[15] Calling him further through the binoculars will also have Miller comment that the empty oval the logo was on needed something on there,[16] as well as find the logo familiar and thinking there's a trick to exposing the hidden material.[17][18] The player has to use the searchlights on the watchtowers to "complete" the logo, yellow lights for the standard "Kojima Productions" logo, and red lights for the Los Angeles branch. Completing the standard company logo will have Miller announce "KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS." While completing the Los Angeles branch logo will have him express bemusement at the logo.[19]

The player can locate various logos for previous games in the Metal Gear series, adorning various walls, buildings and the MSF helicopter. Viewing the logo of each Hideo Kojima-directed game with the binoculars and then using the radio will cause Miller to comment on the games, including the graphic details for each one,[20] and imitate characters from each one (specifically, Big Boss in Metal Gear [though he will say "Miller here" despite not appearing in that game; with his advice being to stay away from enemies with his subtitles being in the style of the MSX2 game[21]], himself in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake [specifically, his advice that right or wrong don't matter on the battlefield], Otacon's question about whether Solid Snake was an otaku as well as well as Snake telling Otacon "If we make it through this, I'll tell you." in Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake's advice to Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, The Boss's declaration of making their best ten minutes of their lives in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Drebin's slogan in Metal Gear Solid 4, himself in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker), and in the case of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, on the advancement of technology and Otacon's line in Metal Gear Solid 4 about wondering "what they'll think of next."[22]

However, those not directed by Kojima, will cause Miller to have trouble reading the game's title or recalling anything from them. In addition, a rifle found in the admin building's storehouse is equipped with a light that allows Big Boss to remove the Kojima-directed games' logos, similar to the removal of the XOF logos in the main game's opening, but not the others. Upon erasing all of them, Miller will confirm their disappearance, although he will also stated that the markings will "live on inside you." In addition, Kojima will thank the player "for all [their] support," alluding to a special message from Psycho Mantis when he scans the memory card in the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid and discovers Snatcher and Policenauts save files in the card. In the Déjà Vu missions, the Metal Gear Solid 4 logo is located on a wall of a garage building, and Metal Gear Solid 2 was located on a fence.

If the tank soldier is extracted while the mission is played using the Classic Snake or Cyborg Ninja skins, he will appear in The Phantom Pain despite the mission being non-canon.
