Da Wialo Kallai1

Venom Snake in Da Wialo Kallai, 1984.

Da Wialo Kallai, also known as Wialo Village, was a large settlement in Northern Kabul, Afghanistan.

History

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, most residents evacuated Da Wialo Kallai, resulting in the village being transformed into a Soviet outpost.[1][2]

In 1984, Venom Snake infiltrated Da Wialo Kallai to scout the outpost for intel regarding the captured Diamond Dogs officer Kazuhira Miller's exact location in Da Ghwandai Khar.[1] Ocelot directed him to the largest building due to it possessing a parabolic antenna, thus alongside it being the most guarded place[3] made it the most likely place to possess intel files relating to Miller's whereabouts.[4] He eventually found a document containing Miller's file, and scanned it and forwarded it to Ocelot at Mother Base.[5]

Snake later returned to the village on a mission to eliminate three Soviet commanders, provided by guerrillas embedded in the Soviets' Arab support organization.[6] At the suggestion of the Wialo Company commander,[7] the commanders held a meeting in Da Wialo Kallai to discuss how to deal with Venom Snake, namely reinforcing their troops with more gear. In order to ensure they got through the meeting without the enemy interfering, they had deliberately holed themselves inside a building that would allow for easy spotting regarding intruders approaching, and the Wakh Sind Platoon commander brought along his personal guard to reinforce security.[8][9]

Layout

The Soviet outpost of Da Wialo Kallai was a large occupied village, with several adjoining buildings being in the vicinity, one of which acted as bunks. It also had a stream in the area and small bridges. Its most prominent building was a two-story building at the northern part of the outpost, whose upstairs room featured communications equipment, including a parabolic antenna.[4] For this reason, it was also the most heavily guarded area of the village.[3]

Behind the scenes

Da Wialo Kallai is a location featured Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. In "Episode 7: Red Brass," the player can eliminate the Soviet targets in Da Wialo Kallai either by assassinating them or by recruiting them into Diamond Dogs via Fulton extraction.

Da Wialo Kallai is Pashto for "The Village of the Wise", with "Da" meaning "The", "Wialo" meaning "Wise" and "Kallai" meaning "Village."[10]

Ocelot: That's Wialo village - Da Wialo Kallai. The villagers fled the war and evacuated a while back. Since then, it's become a base for the Soviet's 40th Army. A few days ago, Miller was taken through here, en route towards Da Ghwandai Khar. You [Venom Snake] may be able to pick up the trail there.

Ocelot: How about it? Can you see the village from there? Use the binoculars to recon the place. Look at where the enemies are stationed. Look at their gear. Take it all in. There should be a command post somewhere. See any buildings with tighter security? If there are clues to Miller's whereabouts, I'll bet you can find them in there.

    Mission 7: Red Brass briefing
Benedict "Kazuhira" Miller: This contract comes from a rebel guerrilla faction in Afghanistan. They've gotten wind of a rare meeting between three Soviet commanders running key units in the region. The location is Wialo village. This information comes from a mole planted within the Soviets' Arab support organization. The guerrillas see this as a one-of-a-kind chance to weaken the Soviet forces in one stroke. But if they act themselves, it'll reveal the existence of their mole. That's why this job falls to us. The request is simple. "Eliminate the three pigs, by any means." If these commanders are as good as they say, it'd be a shame to kill 'em... But I leave that decision to you.
