Disguise
From the Metal Gear Wiki
Disguises are items of clothing that will allow you to slip past guards. By behaving suspiciously you can also cause guards to attack you so don't roll, punch, crawl in front of a guard. Having a bloodied disguise or walking into a guard will also raise suspicion. The exception to this is the Raikov disguise; this allows you to attack anyone and get away with it.
On being discovered, it can be quite possible to have guards run right past you once the alert level comes down.

[edit] Metal Gear
In Operation Intrude N313, Solid Snake had to don an enemy uniform in order to gain access to a building. The uniform was not meant to deceive soldiers, so wearing it in different areas was not an option.
[edit] Metal Gear Solid 2
To infiltrate the Shell 1 core, Raiden was given a BDU by Mr X. In order to complete the disguise, Raiden had to have an AKS-74u equipped as well. However, this disguise is the most fragile in the Metal Gear series, as bumping into an enemy will make the disguise come off, given the fact that Raiden complains that the disguise feels too small and tight and is 'dripping with sweat'. Aiming a gun, carrying the wrong equipment, or doing strange moves will make the guard suspicious and trigger a alert unless the players stays still when the guard approaches. Hanging around in the other Struts of the Shell will also raise the suspicisions of any guard that sees Raiden.
After a encounter with Ocelot and a number of the Gurlukovich troops in Shell 1, the disguise is no longer used for blending, since the balaclava is lost. However, the player is still able to wear it and additionally, it can prevent footprints from being marked on the ground after coming out from water thanks to the boots.
[edit] Metal Gear Solid 3
Naked Snake can wear several disguises during Operation Snake Eater. These disguises are treated the same as his normal camouflage uniforms. The main problem with disguises is that CQC and most of Snake's weapons are disabled when disguised, making it difficult to fight back if you are discovered. The only weapons that can be used while wearing a disguise are the K.O. Handkerchief and the Cigarette Gas-Spray, both of which can be found in the areas where the disguises can actually be used (Graniny Gorki and the Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab). There are also special actions that can be performed while wearing a disguise. These can be performed by pressing the action button.
[edit] Disguises
- Scientist - A disguise used to infiltrate Graniny Gorki and the Weapons Lab at Groznyj Grad. If Snake is wearing any face paint or mask with the disguise, the disguise is ineffective from the front. If the guards in the exterior of Graniny Gorki spot Snake wearing the disguise, they will automatically escort him to the basement prison. Pressing the action button makes Snake adjust his glasses (if he isn't wearing any face paint), which briefly improves the disguise from the front. The scientist disguise is only temporarily effective against other scientists; if they spot Snake wearing the disguise, they will stare at him and eventually trigger an alarm.
- Officer - A disguise used to mimic Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov. Special circuitry in the outfit opens up several doors for the wearer, which allows Snake to progress further into Groznyj Grad's Weapons Lab in his pursuit of Sokolov. If the disguise is completed by wearing the Raikov mask, guards will assume that Snake is Raikov, and will never be suspicious of his activities, although dogs may remain suspicious. Pressing the action button causes Snake to salute; guards who spot Snake saluting will return the salute.
- Maintenance - A disguise used to infiltrate the main weapons hangar at Groznyj Grad where the Shagohod is being held. Like the Scientist uniform, this outfit only works from the front if Snake is not wearing any face paint, and other maintenance workers will be suspicious and may cause an alarm if they see Snake from head-on.
[edit] Masks
- Mask - This is an advanced mask that was designed by the CIA to look like Soviet Officer Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov. At the start of the Virtuous Mission Snake asks Major Zero what he should do if he should run into the guy. The Major tells him to beat him up. Sigint considers this his crowning achievement of inventing: a mask that blinks! Getting the lips to move though, was something he saw beyond anyone's ability however.
[edit] Other Masks
These masks are actually pieces of equipment, and are not used as a part of any disguise.
- Monkey Mask - A mask that looks like a monkey (the Pipo Monkey from Ape Escape). To unlock it, get a high score in all the Snake vs. Monkey levels in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Can be worn during cutscenes, but covers Snake's eyes so he can not see with R1 or during any forced first-person scenes.
- Croc Cap - A gavial-shaped cap. It's most useful in water; wearing this while swimming helps make guards ignore Snake. The croc cap also scares fish and dogs away.
[edit] Metal Gear Solid 4
In the Middle East and South America, Old Snake uses an outfit worn by local anti-PMC rebels to disguise himself as a militiaman. In the Middle East, Snake loses this disguise (which is not to be confused with a burkha) after being pursued by two Metal Gear Gekkos, and ends up stuck in the line of fire between the PMC mercs and the local militia unless he manages to get in the militia's good graces. Snake can also find a similar disguise in his excursion to South America. Later, for his mission in Eastern Europe, he disguises himself in local civilian garb.
