RGD-5

The RGD-5 is a Russian fragmentation grenade developed after World War II. In contrast to the pineapple design used in World War II, the RGD-5 has a smooth casing with a crimp line running around the middle of the grenade. The body consists of two sheet-steel halves crimped together with an interior fragmentation liner, similarly to the M67 grenade. The fuse is taller, thinner, and more rounded compared to American grenades, and is hermetically sealed to the body. This means the RGD-5, and other grenades, will still detonate if dropped into water. The safety pin is also located on the opposite side in comparison to the M26.

The grenade has 110g of TNT and the liner in notched to explode into roughly 300 fragments upon detonation. The fuse gave a delay of 3-4 seconds, although the delay could vary.

Usage[]

Developed after World War II, this was the Red Army's standardized grenade.

During the Virtuous Mission of 1964, the KGB operatives stationed in Tselinoyarsk utilized the RGD-5. Three weeks later, during Operation Snake Eater, Colonel Volgin's faction of GRU also made use of the grenade, with Naked Snake procuring some for his own use.

Warning: The following information is from outside Hideo Kojima's core "Metal Gear Saga." Its canonicity within the continuity is disputed, therefore reader discretion is advised.[?]

During the events of the San Hieronymo Incident in 1970, the renegade members of FOX and the Red Army both utilized RGD-5s. Big Boss and his resistance group later procured their own RGD-5s while operating throughout the San Hieronymo Peninsula. At least one soldier threw a RGD-5 grenade at the ICBMG in an attempt to aid Big Boss in stopping the ICBMG's launch against America in order to repay the latter for risking his life to save their homeland, Russia, from the ICBMG.

Non-"Metal Gear Saga" information ends here.

Behind the scenes[]

Weight: 0.3kg.

Despite the RGD-5 being the official grenade in the Soviet Union, the Soviet soldiers encountered in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker utilize the M67 grenade instead.

The pick-up sprite for grenades in the non-canonical sequel Snake's Revenge resembles the RGD-5, although the manual claimed them to be the M67.

Gameplay[]

In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the blast radius of the RGD-5 is roughly 6 feet, although it will do much less damage at this range if the target is prone.
