Monster Hunter is a series of fantasy-themed action role-playing games developed and published by Capcom that started with the game Monster Hunter for PlayStation 2. As the title suggests, it involves hunting various monsters and other fantasy creatures. Aside from games, it also spawned several anime, manga, and card game series.

Relation to the Metal Gear series[]

As part of a promotion for Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, Kojima Productions teamed up with Capcom to include several crossover references between their franchises. For Kojima Productions, their game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker included a series of Extra Ops missions called Hunting Quests, which also had the same name as Monster Hunter in some cases. In addition, the mainstays Velocipreys, Tigrex and Rathalos, alongside the Felynes and Trenya appeared as enemies and allies, respectively. One of the locations in the game, Isla del Monstruo, was also a reference to the Monster Hunter franchise. When Trenya is first encountered, he also briefly alludes to Pokke Farm.[1]

Around June 2010, four T-shirts were released via DLC that represented the Monster Hunter franchise. In addition, a video was also released around the same time by Kojima Productions relating to the promotion, with various players fighting against Gear REX (during daytime) while wearing the aforementioned T-shirts, as well as utilizing the Human Slingshot. The shirts are, in order, the "Hunter" (Green), "Hunting Spirit" (Black), "Hunting Camaraderie" (Red), and "Hunting Ritual" (Blue), and are listed under the uniform select list as "MHT-K.CHU"; "MHT-K.DAMA"; "MHT-K.TOMO" and "MHT-K.MA", respectively. Alongside the Arakawa Under the Bridge t-shirts, the Monster Hunter shirts cost 74 KB each.

In return, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd featured three costumes that directly referenced the Metal Gear series: A costume for female hunters based on The Boss, a costume based on Big Boss for male hunters, and a costume based on Solid Snake for Felyne hunters.

Although not directly related to each other, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has Rathalos appearing as both a boss character and an assist trophy, which due to Solid Snake reprising his role as a fighter in the game's roster, marks the second time the two franchises have interacted.

The movie adaptation for the franchise was based directly on the crossover between Metal Gear and Monster Hunter in Peace Walker.[2]
