The PlayStation 20th Anniversary was an event held on December 3, 2014 during the PlayStation Awards. As the name suggests, it acted as the celebration of the 20 years of Sony's PlayStation consoles.

Relation to the Metal Gear series[]

Aside from Metal Gear being one of the flagship games on the consoles, series creator/director Hideo Kojima and character artist Yoji Shinkawa attended the event. In addition, two games from the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes won awards during the ceremony, with Ground Zeroes winning the Gold Prize for selling at least 500,000 copies in Japan (an impressive feat especially given its problem with sales) and User's Choice, and Metal Gear Solid 3 winning the 20th Anniversary User's Choice award. Besides these awards, the 20 most voted games also included Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, although none of them made the top 5.

In addition, a Shinkawa artwork of Big Boss was submitted to Famitsu in honor of the 20th Anniversary, and the magazine itself also included several top lists, many of which included games and characters from the Metal Gear series. More specifically, Solid Snake ranked 4th in the top PlayStation video game characters, and Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 3, Ground Zeroes, and Peace Walker were ranked 10th, 18th, 23rd, and 34th, respectively.

Limited edition HDD PS4 covers were released in honor of the 20th Anniversary, featuring Shinkawa's artwork. In addition, Kojima when reflecting on the 20th Anniversary of PlayStation commented that he sympathizes with Sony.
