This article contains information about various animals in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. These animals can be collected in the wilderness. Unlike Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, they are not captured as food, but instead allow the player to gain heroism points by rescuing them. Small animals can be caught directly by the player character or with the use of capture cages, while large animals are extracted by Fulton recovery. Although some animals are able to be captured without a fight, there are some that are significantly dangerous when engaged in open combat.

Most animals that are caught by capture cage prompt a general acknowledgement from Ocelot, upon the player character leaving the mission area,[1] in some cases remarking on their rarity.[2] Some of the rarest species cause him to provide a more full description of the animal.

The "Conservation" achievement requires extracting at least one of every species to Mother Base.
