Singing sand is sand that produces sound. The sound emission may be caused by wind passing over dunes or by walking on the sand. Singing sand is created when certain conditions come together, such as sand grains being round and between 0.1 and 0.5 mm in diameter, the presence of silica (quartz) and the sand being at a certain humidity.

Usage[]

Zanzibar Land Disturbance[]

Main article: Zanzibar Land Disturbance

Singing sand was utilized in the central part of the desert in Zanzibar Land. The sand was imported from Okinawa, Japan, and would emit a squeaking noise when walked across. During the Zanzibar Land Disturbance in 1999, Solid Snake was forced to cross the sand in order to reach the Tower Building, taking care to avoid alerting enemy soldiers with its noise.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Singing sand appears in the Desert in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, north of the Lost Woods (Maze Wood). An audible squeaking noise occurs if the player walks across the sand. Doing this will trigger Noise Mode. This can avoided by crawling over it instead. In contrast, the sand makes no noise when enemy soldiers walk across it.

Singing sand, also known as whistling sand and barking sand, can be located all over the world. Pollution can cause singing sand to lose its "voice."[2]
