This article lists downloadable content (DLC) for both Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Ground Zeroes DLC[]

There is currently no downloadable content for use within Ground Zeroes. However, by ordering a retail copy of it from various retailers in Japan, DLC for use in The Phantom Pain is available.[1]

The first DLC is a passcode that will unlock a special weapon for The Phantom Pain when it is released. This will be given out via GEO. It is later revealed to be a Windurger S333 Combat Special with an olive colored personal ballistic shield.

The second DLC is a passcode that will unlock a special soldier for Mother Base in Ground Zeroes. This will be exclusively released by the Japanese company GEO. The soldier was eventually unveiled to be named "Skull", who as the name implies will have a Skull-based tattoo near their right eye. The tattoo bears some resemblance to the Militaires Sans Frontières logo, only it is facing forward instead of to the side.

The third DLC is a passcode for unlocking a special cardboard box in The Phantom Pain. This will be released by the Japanese Amazon website. It is later revealed to be the Wetland cardboard box.

The fourth DLC is a passcode for unlocking a special Mother Base soldier in The Phantom Pain. This will be released by GameTsutaya.

The fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth DLC are a pack of voice clips of Snake and other characters meant for mobile devices, which can be gained by pre-ordering from Joshin, Eiden, 100満ボルト, 古本市場, 一部限定店舗, and the PlayStation Store/Sen.

Players with a save file of Ground Zeroes can import it to access the MSF Sneaking Suit and unique Mother Base staff for The Phantom Pain.[2] Retail copies of the game in the West also come with a DLC voucher for Mother Base Staff.

In addition pre-ordering the Day One edition of Ground Zeroes will result in the player unlocking a new staff member for Mother Base, similar to the GEO preorder. This soldier, however, is named Fox, who as the name implies has a FOX tattoo near their right eye.

Posters for Puma also showed Ground Zeroes-era Big Boss wearing Puma-related products, although it is not made clear whether this was meant to imply that Puma products would appear as DLC for Ground Zeroes.

The Phantom Pain DLC[]

Pre-orders[]

During the official announcement for The Phantom Pain's release date, DLC was also announced included in a Collector's Edition and Day One Edition. DLC was announced for both the single player portion of The Phantom Pain as well as Metal Gear Online 3. Some of these are also available under specific pre-orders for the Special Edition and Phantom Pain Editions for the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game and preorders from the various individual games, such as the white personal ballistic shield and the Maschinen Taktische Pistole 5 Weiss being available via pre-orders from the Japanese Amazon site, the Adam-Ska Special handgun and the silver personal ballistic shield would be available via pre-orders from Geo, the Rocky Terrain cardboard box via pre-order from GAME Tsutaya, the Gray Urban Camo fatigues via preorders from other shop, the All-Purposes Dryland fatigues via preorders from the PlayStation Store, and the Blue Urban Camo fatigues via pre-orders from Famima, as well as a special offer from Game TSUTAYA that throws in a special Cardboard Box if one preorders by September 16.[3][4] Items that are written in bold are included in both Collector's and Day One editions of the game, those marked with a "*" indicate it is available via pre-order via select chains, and those marked with a "**" are available via DLC passcode given via pre-orders for Ground Zeroes at select chains.

In the overseas releases, the Day One editions DLC content, depending on the version used, is different: The physical version includes the Blue Urban Fatigues, the Adam-ska Special with the Silver Personal Ballistic Shield, and the Wetland Cardboard Box. The digital version instead features the Black Ocelot fatigues, the Windurger S333 CombatSpecial with the Olive Drab Personal Ballistic Shield, and the Rocky Terrain Cardboard Box, alongside an XP boost for Metal Gear Online. Note that the digital versions only apply to the PS3 and PS4 versions. In the Steam version of the overseas release, the Day One editions instead features the Venom Snake emblem, a new Mother Base Staff member, and save transfers from copies of the Steam version of Ground Zeroes released prior to August 31, 2015. In addition, two unique Mother Base staff members are also included in various pre-orders for the game. One, named Canine, is included as a pre-order in every direct pre-order for The Phantom Pain and in the case of the overseas release, acting as one of the pre-order bonuses for the Steam version, while the other, named Hound, is only included in the Xbox Games pre-order for the Xbox One version in the Japanese version, or by pre-ordering the game via the PlayStation Store.

The European versions of the Collector's Edition has the codes pre-included on two slips of paper, while in America, a single code was emailed to those who pre-ordered the Collector's Edition that is used for both The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Online 3. However, technical difficulties resulted in a delay of release for the items. The Gold Wu Silent Pistol, Gold AM-MRS-4, and Metal Gear REX Helmet were eventually released via a PSN DLC for those who bought the Collector's Edition to make up for it on October 13, with the XP Boost eventually being released on October 15 with its time in effect extended by a week.[5][6][7] The REX Helmet was available immediately upon being unlocked, while the Gold weapons required that the player reach Level 4 before fully accessing them. The Xbox Store equivalents, including the XP Boost, will be released on October 31.[8][9][10][11] All of the preorder items for both MGO and MGSV with the exception of the XP Boost were later given a more public release on November 17, costing $0.99 each.[12]

Behind the scenes[]

Retail copies of Ground Zeroes within the PAL region were released with a slip of paper featuring a DLC code that could only be redeemed upon the release of The Phantom Pain. The paper listed the downloadable content as Limited Edition "Mother Base Staff" Code, and it also directed players to Konami Europe's website. However, the link printed on the paper now leads to a 404 page on Konami Japan's website. This is apparently only useable when The Phantom Pain was released.
