Raptors were medium-sized bipedal Unmanned Gears utilized by Desperado Enforcement LLC. They had Gekko-like legs, claws and blades similar to the LQ-84i Blade Wolf.

Description[]

The Raptor was developed as a means to realize the concept of a combined fighting force of Gekko and Tripods. It has a streamlined and more compact version of the former's body and employs a cost-efficient Dwarf Gekko-based control system, a reason of which it ran into trouble in development.

Equipped with componentized armor, their weaponry is comprised of an electromagnetic weapon system used to disable enemy cyborgs, homing energy spheres and a flexible shoulder mounting, capable of accommodating either a machine gun or a quad missile pod.

The main drawbacks of Raptors are that their group operation led the necessary artificial intelligence to becoming primitive, possessing hunting pack instincts and behavior comparable a wild animal's, along with having an optic-neural AI cerebral cortex being smaller than a human's. Their hunting pack-style programming has the side effect of causing surviving Raptors to become enraged when one of their group is destroyed, making them shine red and attack more ferociously.

Raptors were utilized by Desperado in 2018. Some were deployed into Abkhazia, where they ended up eliminated by the then-renegade LQ-84i. The LQ-84i had previously encountered several Raptors in a VR simulation prior to deployment. They were also deployed in the sewers of Mexico, which led directly to a research facility owned by the PMC. Unlike the other UGs (specifically, the Mastiffs, the Vodomerka, and to a lesser extent the Dwarf Gekko), they were not deployed into the sewers simply to collect VR data for the Sears Program, but were instead deployed to retrieve an escaped child from the facility, a Guyanese child named George. Maverick agent Raiden, who intended to infiltrate the facility himself, encountered a trio of these unmanned gears during his trek, immediately after learning from his UG scout, Blade Wolf, of George's existence and in need of help.

Behind the scenes[]

The Raptor (猛禽 Mōkin) is an enemy character in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. The trophy/achievement "Extinction Level Event" requires the destruction of at least 10 Raptors during story mode. The name of the achievement/trophy is a reference to the extinction of the dinosaurs, a group of reptiles that included raptors, after which the weapon is named.

The Raptor's shoulder-mounted machine gun shares its polygon model with that of the Mastiff's grenade launcher.

If the player looks closely, Raptors tend to secrete a fluid from their face area, possibly to emulate a life like creature salivating.
