In 2014, Solid Snake, while undergoing his missions against Liquid Ocelot during the latter's insurrection against the Patriots, made use of dumpster-type trash cans to evade enemy patrols in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In the former instance, he relayed the contents to Otacon, including leftovers from the previous night as well as various roaches on his face and an unidentified creature crawling up Snake's leg, much to Otacon's disgust. When questioned about whether he had any reservations about it, Snake admitted that he'd hide in a toilet if it acted as an effective hiding spot.

Behind the scenes[]

In the 2006 Tokyo Game Show site utilized by Kojima Productions, a trash can was situated near the vending machine on the main site, with a discarded bottle near it. Clicking on it supplies the user with a map of the layout of the event.

The gameplay mechanic for hiding in dumpsters were introduced in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Depending on whether the player called Otacon before or after he pointed out a dumpster to hide in, Otacon's exchange with Snake at the beginning of the Codec call relating to it will vary.

It later made a return in Metal Gear Solid V, with the addition of peeking up briefly to fire a gun at a soldier and/or performing CQC on them.
