[edit] Claymore Mine

Explosive that detonates when someone walks over it. Because they can be difficult to detect, sensors have to be used to avoid them. Crawling over them allows Snake to pick them up safely. When laid on the ground, a 90º laser sight is placed in front of the mine, indicating the mine's detonation reach.

[edit] Flamethrower

A weapon that emits a stream of flaming liquid causing burn damage to targets. Effective in confined spaces as it fills the space with flame. It is the weapon of choice for The Fury as well as Pyro Bison and Fire Trooper. On the mountains before fighting The Fury, Snake also encounters Flamethrower Guards. These guards will explode a few seconds after being shot in their fuel tanks. Oddly enough, a makeshift flamethrower, cobbled together from a can of hairspray and a Zippo lighter, was the weapon that Solid Snake used to kill Big Boss.

[edit] Machine Gun

Weapon attached to Cyphers and Surveillance Cameras to provide an offensive capability.

[edit] Shotgun

The shotgun is often touted as the king of close-quarters combat. Because they spray a cluster of pellets instead of single slugs, shotguns can do a lot of damage in a very short amount of time. Going up against a shotgun in close quarters is a mistake that no soldier makes twice; the lucky ones learn to keep their distance, while the others lie dead. Due to the spread of the pellets, the shotgun does not make an effective long-range weapon.

Appearances

[edit] Thompson "Tommy Gun"

One of the weapons used by The Pain in his battle against Naked Snake. The Thompson is a .45 caliber submachine gun, used most famously by criminals in the 1920's and by American soldiers during World War II. The Pain somehow forms his Tommy Gun from his hornets gathering around his arm in the shape of the gun itself.

[edit] M61 Vulcan

A 20mm High-Powered M61-Vulcan which is normally mounted on aircraft. However due to Vulcan Raven's supernatural strength, he is able to use it as his personal weapon and wield it with ease. It is surmounted that Raven acquired this particular weapon from one of the downed aircrafts that Roy Campbell mentions at the beginning of the Shadow Moses Incident.

See Vulcan Raven for more information

[edit] Tanks

  • An M1-Abrams was found on Shadow Moses Island during the Shadow Moses Incident, the tank was most likely used by Vulcan Raven when battling against Solid Snake.
  • An Unknown tank was being used during the rise of Liquid Ocelot in the Middle East, it is also unknown if this tank was manufactured in the United States prior to being shipped to a PMC in the Middle East.

[edit] Laser Cannon

A fictional laser weapon mounted on Metal Gear REX's body unit. If Solid Snake gets too close, Liquid Snake, piloting the REX, will shoot him with it. The laser was also used to cut off Grey Fox's arm.

[edit] TNT

TNT is a remote detonated explosive. It can be used as a way to attack guards from a safe distance. Ammunition and food storage areas can also be demolished using TNT, causing the guards in the surround screens to be low on ammo and very hungry, willing to eat even the most rotten food available.

[edit] Rail gun

A rail gun uses electromagnetic rails instead of chemical propellants to fire projectiles; this allows the rail gun to launch shells at extremely high velocities. A portable version is used by Fortune in Metal Gear Solid 2; however, man-portable railguns are entirely fictional and do not exist in real life. A larger, more plausible version was used by Metal Gear REX. While REX's designer originally intended it to shoot down nuclear missiles, it was refitted to fire nuclear warheads instead. There also appears to be one mounted on Crying Wolf's back, as seen in a Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots trailer.
