GA-KO

GA-KO

The GA-KO is a doll based on a cartoon duck, taking a proud pose. It makes an appearance in many Metal Gear games. Kerotan is GA-KO's mascot counterpart.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater[]

In Metal Gear Solid 3, if the player calls Sigint while wearing the GA-KO camo, Para-Medic will chastise them for not knowing what GA-KO is. She will then call Snake cute. Also when the player first wears the camo, they will hear the sound of the Kerotan frogs that are scattered across the map. In the Nintendo 3DS version, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, the GA-KO camo is replaced with the Fruit camo, which serves a similar purpose, only it hears the cry of Yoshis.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops[]

In the online mode of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (and Portable Ops Plus), a GA-KO would appear as the target that needed to be captured. It also appeared as an item. The player could wind it up, and guards would become distracted by its distinct noise.

"A GA-KO doll. Wind it up and watch it waddle !"
―GA-KO weapons description in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

In Portable Ops and Portable Ops Plus, entering the password !TRAUMER (North American version) or GAK.O (European version) will unlock a soldier that looks identical to the Soviet soldiers in the game, but wears the GA-KO camo pattern from Metal Gear Solid 3 instead of the regular brownish color. His careers/special abilities are Scout and Athlete, and he comes equipped only with the GA-KO item from the game. The only known methods to recruit him are by password/trade.

"A specially enhanced soldier and a serious Gako fan. Loves cute toys, especially Gako, and is never seen without his Gako-pattern camo suit. No need to worry about getting it dirty -- he has plenty of spares."
―Official description in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots[]

GA-KO appears in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as a wind-up egg timer. Sunny uses it throughout the game's cutscenes to help her make her eggs. Konami produced an actual alarm clock based on this, available to buy.

Metal Gear Online[]

In Metal Gear Online, the GA-KO, and sometimes the Kerotan, would need to be captured in Team Sneaking, Capture Mission, Solo Capture Mission, Rescue Mission, and the Race Mission.

Behind the scenes[]

On November 10, 2004, Konami released several memorabilia based on the GA-KO camouflage and by extension, GA-KO, including a portable ashtray, a mug, a stand bank, and a T-shirt.[1]

In a special movie for Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, Old Snake, Roy Campbell, and Raiden held an event where their GA-KOs would race to the finish line, which was indicated by a GRU soldier's laser sight from his scorpion. The Yellow Genome Soldier also acted as the race starter, using his FAMAS to signal the start of the race. However, the Yellow Genome Soldier ended up winning the race despite not being one of the racers. Raiden and Campbell, under Old Snake's command, took revenge by killing the Yellow Genome Soldier with their RPG-7s.
