Grenade
From the Metal Gear Wiki
(Redirected from Grenades)
A Grenade is an explosive device that comes in several forms.
[edit] Types
- Fragmentation Grenade (M67 in MGS2, RGD-5 in MGS3) - Heavily damages anyone nearby, or kills them if they are too close when it goes off. In MGS they were significantly effective with a kill radius of two feet with an additional concussion radius of one more foot. In MGS2 they were not very effective with a circular kill radius of about two feet but abscent of a concussion radius. In MGS3 they were staunchly more effective with a kill radius of about six feet when the target was standing upright, however when the target was prone, the kill radius was about two feet.
- White Phosphorous (WP) Grenade - Incendiary grenade causes the immediate area to catch fire. Can cause serious burns to anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in its blast.
- Stun Grenade (XM82) - Causes temporary blindness and deafness and disrupts balance. Can effectively stun a room full of guards without harming them. In MGS3 and 4, care should be taken while using a stun grenade as facing the blast can cause the player to go blind temporarily. To avoid this, the player should turn their back to the grenade or throw from the maximum distance possible. Having the Thermal Goggles or Night Vision Goggles equipped while using these is not recommended, as it will significantly increase the effects of it on Snake or Raiden.
- Smoke Grenade - Creates a smokescreen that Snake can use to escape from the enemy. It also acts as a form of tear-gas which can make attack dogs lose Snake's scent. Standing too close to the clouds of smoke will cause Snake to cough.
- Chaff Grenade - Temporarily disrupts and disables electronic equipment, such as Surveillance Cameras, but is a double-edged sword as it also stops the Soliton Radar from working. While this grenade does not actually exist in the real world, a form of chaff which confuses enemy radar is used commonly by fighter aircraft to confuse radar systems. It can be used to disturb the targetting systems of the Harrier and the mass-production models of Metal Gear RAY in MGS2. More commonly, it can be used to disrupt enemy radios should they spot the player though this only leads them to escape to somewhere else and call backup again. (In MGS3, it also causes the Active Sonar, Motion Detector and AP Sensor to be useless until the chaff dissipates.) They also cause Volgin's bursts of electricity to miss, disrupt the targeting of the Shagohod's guided missiles, and can be used to open a window of opportunity to attack the M1A1 Abrams tank and Metal Gear REX.
In Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops it can be used to jam enemy radios preventing them from reporting the current situation or calling for backup ironically it does not affect communication between the player and Roy Campbell or another person. This can be used to disrupt certain communication methods and fulton recovery in multiplayer.
- Liquid Nitrogen Grenade - Does small amounts of damage and freezes enemy weapons. Only usable by Python in Portable Ops.
[edit] Launchers
These are weapons that can be used to fire grenades.
- Crossbow
- RGB6
The grenades appear in all MGS games, as well as Metal Gear Online. A Grenade Launcher is also Solid Snake's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
