At some point during the late 2000s, early 2010s, James ended up experimented on by the Patriots, resulting in him becoming a cyborg. His left arm, in particular, was replaced with a cybernetic one, containing data from the Patriots.
After the Patriots' fall, he ended up joining Desperado Enforcement LLC., eventually rising up the ranks.

In 2018, James, alongside the rest of Desperado under Mistral, took part in the Abkhazian Coup under the employment of their client, the Chechen terrorist Andrey Dolzaev. During this time, he patrolled the outer perimeter of the old part of Sukhumi that led to the Russian coastal refinery plant in Abkhazia. He was eventually ambushed and killed by the Maverick member Raiden while on patrol, with Raiden taking his arm in the process.
Behind the scenes
Stephen is a character in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, as well as one of thirty cyborgs to contain retrievable left arms in the game. He acted as the second cyborg commander in Chapter R-01 and of the whole game, manning a gate blocking Raiden's path.
