The M82 is a recoil-operated, semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle developed by the American Barrett Firearms Manufacturing company. A heavy SASR (Special Application Scoped Rifle), it is used by many units and armies around the world. It is also called the "Light Fifty" for its .50 BMG (12.7×99mm NATO) chambering. The weapon is found in two variants, the original M82A1 (and A3) and the bullpup M82A2. The M82A2 is no longer manufactured, though the XM500 can be seen as its successor.

Overview[]

Guns of the Patriots Incident[]

During the Guns of the Patriots Incident in 2014, several members of a Army-Marine joint task force carried M82A2s during their attempt to arrest Liquid Ocelot in Eastern Europe. However, their weapons were locked down after Liquid hijacked the Sons of the Patriots system, leaving them unable to use them.

In the prelude to the attack on the PMC mother company Outer Heaven's headquarters ship, Outer Haven, Akiba was supplied with a M82A2 by Drebin 893, which Otacon noticed before Drebin revealed his presence aboard the USS Missouri.[1] He later made use of the weapon to take down several Haven Troopers inside Outer Haven's command room.

Behind the scenes[]

A large anti-materiel rifle, the M82A2 fires large-caliber .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun) rounds, giving it the greatest power and range of any conventional sniper rifle in the game. Equipped with a high efficiency muzzle brake, which reduces recoil enough for fairly simple control and relatively easy repeat fire. Its oversized box magazine holds 10 rounds. There are no modifications available for this weapon. It can instantly destroy a Gekko with one well-aimed shot to the head and is capable of killing average PMC soldiers in one shot regardless of where on the body the shot hits, even on higher difficulty. It can destroy helicopters in two shots, Humvees in one shot, and Strykers in about 7-8 shots. It is recommended by Hideo Kojima. Akiba acquires this rifle in Act 5 from Drebin, one of the only times he is not using an XM8.[1] Can be purchased from Drebin for about 200,000 DP.

The M82A2 is very useful in Big Boss runs because it does large amounts of damage to bosses and because of the large number of robot enemies in Act 4. Given an average BBE run, this rifle can be purchased by the time Snake has to deal with Raging Raven. It can be also used instead of the Rail gun at the Suicide Gekko portion of Act 4, and to a suprisingly better way than the traditional way, as the M82A2 doesn't need to be charged to kill Gekkos and can be easily shot rapidly to kill any unfavourable and unpredictable Gekkos.
