The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands (Marshallese: Aolepān Aorōkin M̧ajeļ), is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line. Geographically, the country is part of the larger island group of Micronesia.

Nuclear tests[]

Bikini Atoll was the site of more than 20 nuclear weapons tests by the United States, between 1946 and 1958, including the test of a practical hydrogen bomb in 1954. Jack (Naked Snake) was stationed at the American base on Kwajalein on March 1, 1954, during the "Bravo Shot," the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the United States, with a yield of 15 megatons of TNT. He was ultimately the only one of the American soldiers stationed there to have comparably little negative medical side effects from exposure to the fallout, though it was later revealed he was left sterile.

In 1964, when film enthusiast Para-Medic described Godzilla's origins (via nuclear testing) to Naked Snake, the latter commented that the Marshall Islands must be "crawling with monsters."

In 1970, Snake alluded to his prior participation in Bravo Shot when making small talk with Elisa on why she chose to betray Gene despite being loyal to him, after learning she had been orphaned and irradiated as a result of the Kyshtym disaster in the Ural Mountains.[1]

Non-"Metal Gear Saga" information ends here.

Behind the scenes[]

The location, and in particular the Bravo Shot test, was alluded to in Snake Eater, forming a major part of Big Boss's backstory, with it being revealed he had been left sterile as a result of participation in the event. Although not directly mentioned in the Trial Edition of the game, it was given an indirect allusion/foreshadowing in the trial edition's equivalent of the Gavial/Godzilla conversation with Para-Medic, where, after Snake hears Para-Medic's description of Godzilla, he took particular note in how the titular character was "...radioactive and pissed off..."

Snake: Then why did you end up betraying [Gene]? // Elisa: It was the nukes... No one should ever be allowed to use nuclear warheads. Not ever. I'm a victim of the atomic bomb, Snake. My parents were nuclear physicists working in the Soviet Union. There was an accident, at the Kyshtym facility, and they were killed in the ensuing explosion. // Snake: Kyshtym... The nuclear disaster in the Ural Mountains. // Elisa: Yes. And Ursula and I suffered the aftereffects. It still haunts me in my dreams. I see my parents dying n the explosion. I see the ashes of death falling from the sky. Soon afterwards we gained our abilities. Right after we were sent back to our country. // Snake: I've been exposed, too. The tests at Bikini Atoll...
