The Metal Gears are the main threat in all of the Metal Gear games. They are large mecha similar to bipedal tanks, and are usually equipped with nuclear warheads.

[edit] What is a Metal Gear?
There is quite a lot of debate over what counts as a Metal Gear. This is because a lot of weapons have been designed to fill the role that a Metal Gear usually fills or uses the same technology.
The general definition is that a Metal Gear is a nuclear equiped bipedal tank that can attack targets at long range while remaining undetected.

While filling the role of a Metal Gear the Shagohod isn't actually one itself. This is because it was designed by Sokolov. The original Metal Gear was designed by Granin which he described as being like a missing link between soldiers and tanks. To be truly mobile It needs legs.
[edit] Arsenal Gear
Arsenal Gear is an evolutionary step from other Metal Gears. While it has the same nuclear threat as other Metal Gear it can also subtly manipulate information using GW.

GEKKO, although similar to the bipedal namesake of the game series, is not a Metal Gear. Series creator Hideo Kojima made the comparison that while Metal Gear is comparable to a tank, GEKKO could instead be seen as a jeep or similar smaller scale vehicle. Given the codename "IRVING" by the U.S. Military, this mecha is equipped with assault weaponry, a near sentient A.I. system, and a small nuclear arsenal.
