Metal Gear 1, code number VRC-4, was an unmanned nuclear-armed bipedal tank created in Outer Heaven, then mass-produced on another base three years later.

History[]

At some point, Outer Heaven commander Big Boss ordered the kidnapping of Dr. Pettrovich, the foremost robotics expert, forcing him to develop Metal Gear. A Supercomputer was also built to control the weapon.[1]

Outer Heaven[]

When the U.S. Government learned about the existence of "a weapon of mass destruction" in Outer Heaven, it requested Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND to investigate, unknowingly that its commander was the same man that led Outer Heaven. Big Boss prepared Operation Intrude N312 and sent FOXHOUND's top agent Gray Fox to infiltrate the fortress. Fox was eventually imprisoned, after discovering what the weapon was. Few days later, Solid Snake, along with three other companions, was sent in Outer Heaven during Operation Intrude N313 to destroy Metal Gear. Upon rescuing Dr. Pettrovich, he learned the location of the Supercomputer, thus proceeded to sub-basement 100 of Building #3, and destroyed it.[1]

Post-Outer Heaven[]

Three years later, another military base led by Big Boss, began mass-production of Metal Gear 1 units. When FOXHOUND was informed about it by a spy, Solid Snake led Operation 747 and infiltrated the enemy base with fellow agents John Turner and Nick Myer. Interrogating an enemy officer, Snake learned that the weapons were being prepared for transport on a cargo ship, so he infiltrated the vessel, which set sail just as Snake boarded. Upon discovering the ship was carrying dozens of mass-produced Metal Gear 1 units, Snake blew up the ship, stopping the production and preventing the use of the weapons.

Legacy[]

Shortly after the sinking of the ship, Snake was informed that there was also a new Metal Gear in development on the base, a model much more destructive than Metal Gear 1.

Behind the scenes[]

The Metal Gear weapon is mentioned throughout the NES version of Metal Gear, although its appearance was omitted from the game due to hardware limitations.[2]

In the NES sequel Snake's Revenge, the weapon is designated "Metal Gear 1" to differentiate it from its successor, with several inactive units appearing on board an enemy cargo ship in-game. It is also featured in the opening sequence, where its specifications are listed; while most of them are similar to those of the original TX-55 Metal Gear, the armor thickness is defined and its weight is over ten times greater, the latter possibly resulting from a mistake during conversion to imperial units.

The code number "VRC-4" is also the name of a memory management controller (MMC) chip designed by Konami for use in Famicom cartridges that was used by certain titles such as Gradius II and Twin Bee 3, although neither of the Metal Gear games on the Famicom/NES actually employed it (or any of the other VRC mappers produced by Konami).

The names of Metal Gear 1's armaments, seen in the opening sequence, are given in Romaji rather than directly translated.[3] The names are actually those of the game's developers: the right leg featured "Akama!" (referring to Hitoshi Akamatsu) and "Fuji" (referring to T. Fujimoto); the missile launcher featured "Okuda" as well as "Fuku" (referring to Y. Okuda and S. Fukuoka, respectively); the cockpit featured "Yamasi" (referring to K. Yamashita); and the missile itself featured "Noza" (referring to "A. Nozaki"). The legs also featured the terms "Akya" and "Zanokufuki".[4][5]

Dr. Pettrovich: I am Dr. Pettrovich. The Metal Gear is located about 20km north of this building. It is in sub-basement 100 of Building #3. We have to set plastic explosives on the Supercomputer that controls all the Metal Gear functions. No matter what, you have to set 16 plastic explosives. Good luck!
