In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the player can unlock some bonus Mother Base staff, at most four in total (eight when separating them between genders), depending on how they pre-ordered the game. Each soldier is based on one of the four major military groups from the games (ie, FOX, FOXHOUND, the Militaires Sans Frontières, and Diamond Dogs). The availability of these DLCs varied between platforms and region - whereas all four Mother Base staff sets were distributed in some form or another in Japan, only the Fox and Canine staff members were released for the overseas versions as part of a pre-release bonus. By November 17, 2015, however, all except for the Skull staff members were distributed in some form or another in the overseas versions. All four of them are included in Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience.
Canine is a Diamond Dogs Mother Base bonus staff member who can be unlocked by doing pre-orders from any store outlet for the game in Japan, by getting the Steam version in the overseas release, or by purchasing them as paid DLC starting on November 17. He or she is identified by their bright crimson hair and a Diamond Dogs tattoo on either their left cheek (should the recruit be male) or right (if the recruit was female). The male is named Crimson Canine and the female is Garnet Canine. They possess keen intelligence gathering skills and base building abilities. They are identified as Mother Base Staff 3 on the Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Live.
Hound is a Diamond Dogs Mother Base bonus staff member who can be unlocked only by doing either an extensive Xbox One pre-order from Xbox Games or otherwise pre-ordering the game from the PlayStation Store during the booking period between July 23 and August 30, or by purchasing the game on Steam. He or she is identified by their possessing green hair and a tattoo near their right eye, regardless of gender. The tattoo is based on the FOXHOUND logo, which is also implied by the name of the soldier. According to an advertisement for the pre-orders announcing them in a magazine scan, the male is named Viridian Hound, while the female is named Emerald Hound. In addition, they also possess high-level medical and intelligence gathering skills. They were originally exclusive to the Japanese release, although they were eventually made available for the overseas versions as paid DLC starting on November 17, where they were identified as "Mother Base Staff 4."
Fox is a Diamond Dogs Mother Base bonus staff member who can be unlocked only by either doing a pre-order of the Day One edition of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and inputting the voucher code into The Phantom Pain when it is released (Japanese version) or by inputting codes included in any initial releases for Ground Zeroes into the Konami CORE site, and then picking up the code upon release (North American versions). They are also included with the Steam version of the game. He or she is identified by light brown hair that almost comes across as blonde and, as their name implies, a tattoo near their left eye that matches that of the FOX unit emblem, regardless of gender. The female is named Amber Fox, while the male is named Gold Fox. They have high stats for R&D and Intel.
Skull is a Diamond Dogs Mother Base bonus staff member who can be unlocked only by doing a pre-order of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes via Game Tsutaya and inputting the voucher code into The Phantom Pain when it is released. They are the only bonus staff members not available in the Steam version of the game, though the models and assets for them are still intact within the game files. They will, however, become available in Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience alongside all other DLC. He or she is identified by either a full set of white hair (if the recruit is female) or otherwise a shaved head (male) and regardless of gender, as their name suggests, possesses near their left eye a tattoo with the skull/pangaea portion of the logo for the Militaires Sans Frontières, Diamond Dogs' predecessor (however, their bio erroneously claims that their hair was gold). However, their precise placement will vary, with the male having his tattoo be directly above the left eye, while the female has the tattoo right on the left eye. The male is named Silver Skull and the female is Ivory Skull. They have high support and base development capabilities.

Kazuhira Miller: Remember the guys you brought back from the base in Cuba [United States Naval Prison Facility] nine years ago? Believe it or not, some of them survived that hell [XOF Trojan Horse Operation] we went through. Word reached them that Big Boss is back, and they wanted in. They're good men, our brothers in fate. They'll be glad to know you've seen them here.
