The motion detector is a device that can detect nearby moving objects.
The motion detector contains a sensor that quantifies motion, alerting the user to the presence of moving objects within its field of view. The position of these objects can then be represented as dots on a visual display.
During the CIA's Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater, Naked Snake utilized a motion detector, created by FOX's technology expert Sigint. Although the detector could reveal the positions of patrolling enemy soldiers and moving animals, its limited sensitivity meant that it was incapable of picking up very slight movements. Similar to the active sonar, the motion detector could be rendered inoperable by electronic jamming and its use was limited by batteries.

During FOXHOUND's various operations, the FOXHOUND unit utilized an improved version of motion detectors, known as motion object reactive radar, that was developed in 1998 and alerts the operative to anything moving in close range.
Behind the scenes
The Motion Detector is featured in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as one of several devices that can be used to locate the positions of enemy guards and animals. Moving objects are displayed in the top right of the screen. It is rendered inoperable by radio disruption during the Alert Phase. The equipment weighs 1.8 kg in the Backpack. It is not available under the European Extreme difficulty.
