A mousetrap is a specialized type of animal trap designed primarily to catch mice; however, it may also trap other small animals. There are various types of mousetrap, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

One example of trap is the spring-loaded mousetrap. It is a simple device with a heavily spring-loaded bar and a trip to release it, upon which bait such as cheese may be placed. The spring-loaded bar swings down rapidly and with great force when when anything, usually a mouse, touches the trip.

Soviet forces operating in Tselinoyarsk during the 1960s used spring-loaded mousetraps to deter vermin from their provisions storehouses.

Behind the scenes[]

The Mousetrap is a weapon featured in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It can be used to catch animals alive, such as snakes, birds, frogs, and must be used to catch the invisible Tsuchinoko. After being tripped by an animal, the trap must be recovered and baited again in order to be reused. Mousetrap locations can be viewed on the Map once placed, and can be recovered by crawling over them. Its weight is given as 0.4 kg.

―Mousetrap description in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

A Mousetrap can be obtained from an unconscious Major Ocelot, following Naked Snake's encounter with him during the Virtuous Mission.

If the player kills several rats in the original Metal Gear Solid, Colonel Campbell will remark that he doesn't need a rattrap before reminding Solid Snake of his mission in irritation.
