Night Fright was a Zanzibar Land mercenary who specialized in guerilla warfare. His weapon of choice was a Chinese-made Type 67 silenced pistol. He also made use of an optic camouflage suit that rendered him invisible.
Biography[]
Early career[]
Night Fright was the last surviving member of "the Whispers," a legendary guerilla squad from North Vietnam who was purported to be more skilled at jungle guerilla warfare than even the Green Berets.[1][2] Due to his advanced camoflague suit that made him practically invisible, no one knew what he looked like,[1][2] and he was undetectable by radar.[3] This, along with the use of a Type 67[4] silenced pistol[1][2] (Chinese: 微声手枪 wēi shēng shǒu qiāng[3], literally "small noise hand gun"), earned him the alias, "Phantom Assassin."[2]
Zanzibar Land Disturbance[]

Night Fright fought against Solid Snake in the basement of the Zanzibar Land detention camp, during Operation Intrude F014. Snake was initially unaware of Night Fright's presence until an anonymous fan tipped him off by radio.[1] When mercenary adviser George Kasler learned of this from Snake, he expressed doubts over whether the invisible assassin could be defeated, considering the fact that not even Kasler himself had ever seen him.[2] However, despite the fact that Snake couldn't see Night Fright, he was able to use his sense of hearing to locate and eventually beat his opponent.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Night Fright (ナイト・フライト Naito Furaito?) is a boss character who appears in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. He was originally named Night Sight (ナイトサイト Naito Saito?) in the MSX2 version of the game, but was later renamed in the re-released versions of Metal Gear 2. Night Fright's theme music is notably the only tune omitted from the Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake Original Soundtrack.
Night Fright is the first character in the Metal Gear series to use a form of stealth camouflage, though chronologically, he was preceded by The Fear and Venom Snake. Although Night Fright is stated in-game to have never been seen by anyone, he does briefly flash into view whenever he is hit by one of the player's attacks. Night Fright is the only elite mercenary that doesn't speak to Snake before fighting him.
Night Fright's use of an advanced camouflage suit as well as his nickname "The Phantom Assassin" was omitted from his entry in the Metal Gear Solid 4 Database.[4] This was due to his fellow Zanzibar Land comrade, Jungle Evil, being erroneously attributed with the camouflage suit and nickname in his entry.[5]
