[edit] Operation Snake Eater

See Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater

Two years before the Virtuous Mission, Sokolov requested asylum in the West. The Americans used a mole to sneak his family out of the USSR and then sneaked Sokolov over the Berlin Wall shortly afterwards, an operation which Major Zero conducted.

Sokolov managed to make it in one piece but the operation left him exhaused. He was checked into a hospital in West Berlin as it took him two weeks and over 600 miles to get from the research facility in the Soviet Union to Berlin. A week later, the Cuban Missile Crisis began. on October 28, at the climax of the crisis, the Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba, though Khrushchev demanded that the United States hand back Sokolov, which they did.

Back in the Soviet Union, Sokolov was sent to work on a new nuclear device, a secret weapon so big that Khrushchev was ready to pull out of Cuba to get it back, which was the Shagohad.

When Naked Snake meets up with Sokolov in the USSR, Sokolov tells him about Colonel Volgin. Sokolov explains that ever since the Cuban Missile Crisis two years ago, Khrushchev has been pursuing a policy of peaceful coexistence with the West. Despite resistance and criticism from hawks in the army, and the provincial authorities, Khrushchev has managed to suppress the opposition up to that point. But the failure of his agricultural policies has put him in a precarious position. Khrushchev has also lost his largest partner, John F. Kennedy, due to him being assassinated, and is now losing his power base. A certain group is plotting to use this opportunity to seize power by rallying the anti-government forces, overthrowing Khrushchev, and installing Leonid Brezhnev and Alexey Kosygin in his place. The mastermind behind this plot is Colonel Volgin, a member of GRU.

After The Boss defected, Khrushchev called the President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson, and asked for his cooperation in preventing Armageddon. Johnson explains that The Boss defected, which was arranged by Colonel Volgin, and that she took two miniature nuclear shells along with her and that the Americans had nothing to do with Sokolov's research facility being wiped out by one of those nuclear shells. Khrushchev tells Johnson that he needs some kind of proof that the American government was not involved in any of this and gives the president one week to catch The Boss yourselves and recover the remaining nuclear device and asks that he "do something" about Volgin as well. Khrushchev goes on to say that if the president fails, then it will mean the beginning of a new world war. He also explains that even if he were to believe that they were correct, they still would need to supply proof because if they don't, then the Red Army would revolt and overthrow him, and thus he won't be able to stop the war.

During Operation Snake Eater, Sokolov tells Snake that EVA was sent by Khrushchev and that he has abandoned him. Volgin then enters the room and finds out Snake is a spy and tortures the two of them, supposedly killing Sokolov in the process.

After escaping imprisonment, Snake meets EVA again, who tells him that Khrushchev wanted her to get the data on the Shagohod from Sokolov.

After defeating The Boss and flying out of the USSR, Snake and EVA are locked on by some MiG. Just as they are about to fire on Snake and EVA, they are called off by Khrushchev, perhaps because he did not want things to get messier than they already were he just wanted the Americans to "owe him one".

Sometime later, Snake learns that EVA was not working for Khrushchev but is instead an agent of the People's Republic of China.
