Noriyoshi Ohrai

Self-portrait of Noriyoshi Ohrai made in the early '80s.

Noriyoshi Ohrai (生頼 範義 Oorai Noriyoshi?, November 17, 1935 - October 27, 2015[1]) was a prolific Japanese illustrator whose work has been used as promotional art for movies, video games, novels, resin kits and album covers. While active since 1962, initially working as a magazine and book illustrator, he would gain fame in 1980 when George Lucas commissioned him to do the international poster for The Empire Strikes Back after being impressed by an earlier Star Wars piece Ohrai did for a sci-fi magazine. Other works by Ohrai include the poster art for the Japanese releases of The Goonies and King Kong 2 (coincidentally, Ohrai's artwork for both films were used for the packaging of the Famicom and MSX video game adaptations by Konami), various films in the Godzilla series (up until Godzilla: Final Wars), and packaging artwork for numerous video games produced by Koei (such as the Nobunaga's Ambition series). He passed away from pneumonia at the age of 79.

Ohrai has created artwork for the Metal Gear series, particularly for the Japanese premium package editions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, as well as books such as Metal Gear Solid 2: The Making and Metal Gear Solid: naked. Some of his work can be seen in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in Act 3 when Old Snake meets Big Mama.
