OILIX

From the Metal Gear Wiki

OILIX

OILIX, also known as Botulliococcus Ozuma Brownie and Oil-X was developed in the 1990s by Dr. Kio Marv.

Dr. Kio Marv created Botulliococcus Ozuma Brownie, codenamed "Oil-X", through genetic modification of the naturally occurring plankton Botulliococcus Brownie. The altered plankton, which later became known as OILIX, thrived in warm, arid environments, and used photosynthesys to consume biological materials, producing a substance indistinguishable from naturally occurring high-quality petroleum as a byproduct. OILIX thus enabled commonly available biomass to be processed into massive quantities of oil in any suitable environment. As this permitted 96 octane gasoline and even aviation fuel to be produced at almost no cost, Botulliococcus Ozuma Brownie became a sign of hope during the brutal energy crisis at the turn of the 20th century.

[edit] Zanzibar Land Uprising

See Operation Intrude F014

On his way to reveal OILIX at the Praha World Energy Conference, Zanzibar Land agents hijacked Dr. Kio Marv's plane and kidnapped him in an attempt to secure the OILIX formula, thus increasing Zanzibar Land's global influence. Big Boss, the leader of Zanzibar Land, knowing that the desert nation was an optimal location for OILIX production, planned on using OILIX to dominate the global oil market and thus the economies of practically every developed and developing nation. Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar, a willing citizen of Zanzibar Land, posed as a prisoner in an attempt to retrieve the formula from Marv, but ultimately killed him without locating it. Unknown to Zanzibar Land, Marv, a video game fanatic, had hidden the OILIX formula inside an MSX cartridge. Snake managed to retrieve the MSX cartridge and complete his mission at Zanzibar Land, thus averting the world's energy crisis.

[edit] Trivia

  • Despite the OILIX formula being a major part in helping avert the energy crisis in the world of Metal Gear, it is never once referred to in any other Metal Gear game. And, in an apparent continuity error, it is mentioned circa 2014 that "oil and fuel have become as rare as diamonds" thanks to the war econonmy, but there should be no lack of oil on account of OILIX. However, this same level features exploding oil barrels, the PMC forces have no problem fueling their vehicles, and there is no sign that energy production is a problem whenever such a crisis would cause an unavoidable effect; it is likely that this comment simply refers to how hard commodities as a whole are to obtain in the many war-torn parts of the world.
  • The concept of OILIX is starting to become a reality. As of 2008, Craig Venter is leading the development of a bacteria that consumes high-concentrations of CO2 and converts it into oil.
