A range inhibitor was a device that was used to keep unmanned weapons in check in case they refused to obey or rebelled against their commanders. When activated, it prevented the unmanned weapon from moving an unspecified distance, emitting a purple electromagnetic field similar to an EMP grenade. They could be operated by either a cellphone-like remote controller or an AR system.

Desperado captain Mistral used a range inhibitor to control the wolf-like unmanned weapon LQ-84i in 2018. When ordered to scout the city of Abkhazia, it attempted to convince her to deactivate it, but she refused and it attacked her, stealing what it thought to be the inhibitor. After LQ-84i defeated Khamsin, who had been sent to destroy it, Mistral showed up and activated the range inhibitor, preventing it from moving and causing him discomfort in the process. She then used it to torture the LQ-84i into shaking hands with a Dwarf Gekko.
