Red Blaster was a Zanzibar Land mercenary who specialized as a grenadier.

Biography

Early career

Red Blaster was an elite assassin who earned his special operations degree from the Patrice Lumumba University of the former Soviet Union. He once served as an explosives expert for Spetsnaz. His main fighting style involved laying a trap using tripwires, and then throwing his RKG-3 antitank grenades at his target, while hiding behind cover.[1][2]

Red Blaster and Solid Snake fight with grenades, late 1999.

Red Blaster fought against Solid Snake, during Operation Intrude F014, on the 30th floor of the Tower Building. He ambushed Snake as he left the elevator, with wired traps set up all over the room. These traps restricted his movements, leaving him open to attack by Blaster's grenades.[3] However, Snake was able to outsmart him and, in a twist of irony, defeated him using the same weapon type.[2]

Behind the scenes

Red Blaster (レッド・ブラスター Reddo Burasutā?) is one of two bosses (the other being Running Man) whose name was not changed in the re-released versions of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. For unexplained reasons, Red Blaster and Jungle Evil are not featured in the Boss Survival mode, which was included in the re-releases.

Like the other Zanzibar and Outer Heaven mercenaries, as well as many of the characters from the Metal Gear canon, his name is referenced in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as possible word parts of a custom emblem, earned after successfully capturing an enemy outpost.

George Kasler: Red Blaster... He's an elite assassin who likes to blow things up. He'll set booby traps all around to pin his target down, then use those grenades he always carries to finish the job. Snake, give him a taste of his own medicine! He's bound to be hiding behind a wall or something. But you can flush him out with a grenade of your own! ...Over and out.

Solid Snake: Wh... What is this? ...A booby trap? // Red Blaster: That's right. A trap clever enough to catch a fox. Or should I say, a FOXHOUND? // (Red Blaster appears) // Red Blaster: I am Red Blaster, and you're not going anywhere. My grenades will see to it that your death is slow...and painful.
