Rosemary was a psychological counselor, formerly a data analyst and spy, and the wife of Raiden.

Biography

Early career

During her adult years, Rosemary was a data analyst for the Pentagon before working as a spy for the Patriots, the secret cabal that controlled the United States. She was ordered to keep eyes on a U.S. soldier named Jack by developing a romance with him, reinventing herself to suit his tastes. As a result, she altered her clothing style, hair and eye color, and adopted mannerisms and supposed personal interests, in order to meet the standards of Jack's psychological profile.

Rose met Jack in front of Federal Hall on April 30, 2007, after the latter had just transferred to New York. A group of middle-aged Japanese women asked Rose which building King Kong had climbed in the movie. She replied that it was "probably the Chrysler Building." Jack overheard the conversation and told them that she was wrong, and that it was the Empire State Building. The two argued about the matter for so long that the tourists decided to leave. They ended up going to the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park to see who had the better recall. However, by the time they got there, the museum was closed. The two then went their separate ways.

A week later, Rose became reacquainted with Jack after both discovered that they worked in the same military base, as an intelligence analyst. The pair went on their first date that night to the Empire State Building. After that, they went back to Rose's apartment and watched King Kong several times. As per the Patriots' orders, Rose continued to date Jack for the next two years, reporting every detail of his personal life to them, though she would eventually develop legitimate romantic feelings for him. However, Jack remained distant throughout the relationship, revealing little about himself or his past to Rose. He would never spend the entire night with her nor let her into his room. Eventually, Rose, concerned for Jack, and partially suspicious that he may have been having an affair, forced her way into his room where she discovered it to be empty and devoid of personal effects, aside from a bed and a small desk. Rose's forced entry enraged Jack and caused him to raise his hand against her.

Two years after they first met, Rose served on Jack's radio support team, during the Big Shell Incident in 2009. Rose had been called in as a replacement data analyst after FOXHOUND's original choice was allegedly caught in an accident, though the switch had been deliberately engineered by the Patriots. Despite working closely with Jack's commanding officer, Rose never met the Colonel, and had been brought to an undisclosed location after being blindfolded. She also partially decided to become a part of the mission support as a means to ensure that she didn't "chicken out" of stuff she needed to settle with Raiden on April 30, the day after the mission. Although Jack was codenamed Raiden for the duration of his mission, Rose continued to refer to him by his real name, despite the Colonel having told her to avoid doing so. Rose's involvement upset Raiden, as he didn't want her to get involved, though he reluctantly accepted the decision.

Rose supported Raiden during his infiltration of the offshore plant Big Shell, by providing information on the facility's layout and recording his mission data. She also engaged in casual conversation with Raiden, hinting to him that the current date was the anniversary of their first meeting, though Raiden failed to remember this. Rose later investigated the supposed death of Solid Snake as a favor to Raiden, and discovered that the body had been interred and exhumed for DNA testing. She informed Raiden that it had indeed been identified as Solid Snake, though in reality the corpse was that of the clone Liquid Snake.

When Raiden was captured by the terrorist group Sons of Liberty, Rose contacted him in order to give moral support. It was then that she learned from him his true past as a child soldier under Solidus Snake, now the leader of the terrorists, and thus the reason why he was distant in his relationship with her. In turn, she revealed to Raiden that she was a Patriot spy, and that she had recently become pregnant with his child. Shortly afterwards, Rose's communication line was cut and she was removed from the operation, having been taken captive by the Patriots. As a last ditch effort to "dissuade" Raiden from proceeding further into Arsenal Gear, the Patriots created an alternate AI program mirroring Rose, and then attempted to claim that the Sons of Liberty had her on the holds of Arsenal Gear, although Snake snapped Raiden out of it, which also resulted in Raiden becoming disturbed at the possibility that Rose might not have even exist. This program eventually interacted with Raiden alongside the Colonel AI when revealing their existence and motives to Raiden on top of Federal Hall. The Patriots then told Raiden that if he didn't eliminate Solidus, they would kill Rose, their unborn child, and the child of Raiden's deceased ally Olga Gurlukovich.

Following Solidus's defeat, Rose, free from the Patriots' custody, reunited with Raiden in front of Federal Hall, echoing their first meeting two years earlier. There, Raiden proposed to her, telling her that they would pass on the "things that aren't written into our DNA" to their child.

Post-Big Shell

For some time after the Big Shell Incident, Rose and Raiden lived together as a couple. However, their relationship began to deteriorate when Raiden became haunted by his childhood memories from the Liberian Civil War, and would be drunk every time he came home at night. Rose started to feel scared of Raiden's actions despite Roy Campbell's actions to save the couple from each other. Rose did give birth to a healthy baby boy named John but she and Campbell lied to Raiden that the baby had been miscarried. Raiden went further into depression and isolated himself from Rose and retreated to Alaska, thinking he would not be able to live a normal life. Campbell staged a marriage with Rose to protect her and John from the Patriots and convinced her to become a psychological counselor. Her and Campbell's fake marriage also caused the latter's daughter, Meryl Silverburgh, to hate him. In the meantime, to prepare for becoming a psychological counselor, she studied psychology.

Guns of the Patriots Incident

In 2014, Campbell requested that Rose use her new talents as a psychological counselor in CSP (Combat Stress Platoon), to provide Solid Snake with advice on dealing with stress on the battlefield. She was first introduced to Snake by radio during his activities in South America, and continued to support him throughout his mission to eliminate Liquid Ocelot. Later, while witnessing Snake's painful crawl through a corridor filled with microwave emitters, Rose forced herself to look away from the video monitor, as she was unable to watch his suffering.

A month later, following the Patriots' destruction, Rose visited an injured Raiden in the hospital. With the danger of discovery having passed, Rose told Raiden of the truth behind her deception, introducing him to his son John. Rose and Raiden finally decided to reconcile, and began their relationship anew as a family.

World Marshal Incident

Rose and John were later supported by Raiden's work for the PMSC Maverick Security Consulting, Inc. Rose and John were also in New Zealand by 2018, with Raiden having sent them there to keep them safe from Desperado and/or World Marshal.

Personality and traits

Rose was a terrible cook. Raiden often tried to avoid the subject whenever she offered to cook for him. He also once told Iroquois Pliskin that he preferred rations over Rose's homecooking. Similarly, her terrible cooking skills were hinted at by Colonel Campbell in 2014 when talking about the UN ration swap meet and claiming that American rations were voted the worst, with Snake, upon deducing what Campbell was hinting at, expressing his sympathies. By the time of the mid-to-late 2010s, Raiden was able to ingest Rose's cooking, which he implied was due to him turning his taste sensors off.

Rose expressed some tolerance towards smoking, informing Snake as much during Liquid Ocelot's Insurrection, although she did nonetheless gave general health warnings to Snake regarding prolonged use of tobacco. She was also aware of Raiden's former smoking habits prior to quitting by the Big Shell Incident.

When the Colonel told Raiden not to scatter any of the items in Strut C's kitchen, Raiden expressed that he was used to cleaning things up, and even mentioned that Rose's room was a mess. However, Rose told him not to say any more before finishing his speech, which hinted that she was embarrassed. This showed that Rose had a tendency to make a mess in her possessions and furniture.

Rose possessed a lot of online friends at the time of the Big Shell Incident, although she only actually met two of those friends face-to-face at most.

Rose once owned a parakeet, although she didn't tell Raiden about it until the Big Shell Incident.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

According to Hideo Kojima's Grand Game Plan for Metal Gear Solid 2, Rosemary (ローズマリー, Rōzumarī^?) was originally intended to die at the end of the game. She was to have been among the hostages at the Big Shell, but would keep being transferred to different areas of the base, thus causing the player to doubt that she even existed. She was also intended to have been a news anchor for a New York City cable TV station and was in the Big Shell on a news assignment. All of this was eventually scrapped.

Rose and Jack (Raiden's real name) are the names of the main characters in the 1997 James Cameron film Titanic. Additionally, Rose was originally intended to be a blonde, while Raiden was to be brown haired. Her being blonde went as far as being in the final script for Metal Gear Solid 2, specifically during the final scene of the game. In addition, Rose's design in the Codec call was mentioned to be wearing makeup and having her blouse open, in order to emphasize the "unnatural" aspect of her.

Rose is partially based on Kojima's wife who, while they were still engaged, constantly asked him when they would marry. This was incorporated into Rose constantly asking Raiden about April 30 during the Big Shell Incident. During a BAFTA conference in 2012, Kojima revealed that he feels that Rose is one of the worst received characters in the series. He found this to be ironic as Rose is the only female character in the series to be based on a real person.

Concept art of Rose also included some sketches of her wearing a military uniform, presumably as a reference to her initially working at the same military base as Raiden.

When Rose was removed from Raiden's mission support shortly after revealing her stance as a Patriot agent, her voice seemed to grow deeper in a manner similar to HAL 9000's demise scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. In addition, similar to the Colonel AI occasionally adopting skull-like features during one of the AIs speech to Raiden, the Rose AI program occasionally had "her" eyes turn blank.

There is one scene where Rose will kill Raiden on a rooftop. Watching this scene in the HD Collection will result in the player unlocking the achievement/trophy "Love Hurts."

When they first met, Rose and Raiden argued about which building King Kong climbed. Rose believed that it was the Chrysler Building, while Raiden thought that it was the Empire State Building. Coincidentally, the Chrysler Building was destroyed in the 1998 remake of Godzilla.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Subsistence

For obvious reasons, relating to the setting of the game, Rose does not make an appearance in Metal Gear Solid 3. However, she was indirectly referenced:

The Boss's interactions with Naked Snake/Big Boss had some parallels to Rose's interaction with Raiden, including both characters referring to them as "Jack" instead of their codename, and in the Japanese versions, both The Boss and Rose were also voiced by the same actress.

In addition, her meeting with Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2, as well as her and Raiden's anniversary and Raiden's proposal to Rose were briefly and indirectly alluded to by the character Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov, who bears an intentional resemblance to Raiden, if interrogated by the player.

Besides the indirect references in the main game, she also appears in the Secret Theater parody film Metal Gear Raiden: Snake Eraser, where Rose's comments about changing the future led Raiden to decide to kill off Big Boss to ensure he becomes the main character via grandfather paradox, and later targeting Solid Snake directly, after his first attempt to do so failed in the 2005 MGS4 trailer. She later comforts Raiden near the ending and suggests he tries again in Metal Gear Solid 5, while wondering if such a thing even has a chance of existing.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Rose is the only main character in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to not receive an introduction title. While communicating with her via Codec, moving and shaking the controller will cause her breasts to bounce. And her breasts will bounce depending on how the controller is held; for example, if the player holds the left side of the controller, her left breast will bounce (which is a surprising feature). Also, each day the player plays the game, Rose wears different sweaters.

If the player dies in any way, chooses "continue," and then calls Rose, Snake will explain that he felt as though he died recently, also citing the specific method of his death, with Rose explaining how to cope with it, and at least once speculating that Snake is suffering from Depersonalization disorder. However, if the death in question was from being caught in an explosion, she will be the one to state that she felt as though Snake died instead of Snake telling her this.

The official Metal Gear Solid 4 website erroneously states that Rose is voiced by Jennifer Hale instead of Lara Cody.

If Snake kills a wolfdog/crow and calls Rose shortly thereafter, she'll tell him he'll face a psychiatric evaluation if he continues to kill them.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

When the E3 trailer came out for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, fans initially thought that Rose and Little John had been killed by Desperado due to the reference of Raiden's family being killed. However, the reference was in fact about Raiden being orphaned by Solidus Snake and then being taken in as a child soldier, as evidenced by the reference to a civil war in the same scene as well as the same scene depicting Raiden as a child. Yuji Korekado later confirmed in a G4 plot exposé that Rose and Little John were indeed alive in Metal Gear Rising, citing that Raiden joined the Maverick PMC to support his family. Rose and Little John are mentioned several times in the game, having taken residence in New Zealand.

Other appearances

Rose also appeared in Vs. Battle, where she fought against Sunny Emmerich.
