Skowronski was a loyal colonel of the Red Army and a former fighter pilot during World War II. He served as the commanding officer of the secret Soviet missile base on the San Hieronymo Peninsula, prior to FOX's armed takeover in 1970.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Prior to being sent to San Hieronymo, he had acted as a fighter pilot for the Red Army during World War II, fighting against various German planes.

San Hieronymo Incident[]

Main article: San Hieronymo Incident

In 1970, FOX commander Gene initiated a rebellion against the CIA on the San Hieronymo Peninsula, removing Colonel Skowronski from command of the Soviet base. Skowronski, unwilling to accept Gene's authority, was forced to go into hiding after his own men turned on him.

Skowronski hid aboard a cargo ship docked in the harbor, which contained his private collection of World War II fighter planes. He was later discovered by FOX member Python, whom he then attempted to kill after Python called his bluff about sending reinforcements to San Hieronymo Peninsula. However, he failed due to Python's armor, who proceeded to lock Skowronski up in a cage, freezing the door shut with the liquid nitrogen expelled from his suit with only enough liquid nitrogen for the lock to thaw before Skowronski starved to death. After Python left, Big Boss, having observed the earlier confrontation, approached the imprisoned Skowronski, who shouted for soldiers to come to his aid and eliminate the intruder. After realizing that Big Boss was not Python, he laughed about his mistake, and told him that the guards would not follow his commands anyway, thanks to Gene's unnatural charisma. He told Big Boss of his days as a pilot in WWII, and that if he had a MiG or a Sukhoi he would be able to kill Gene himself. After listening to Skowronski's increasingly desperate rantings, Big Boss shot the cage's frozen lock and left him to his own devices. The colonel's erratic behavior caused Big Boss's comrade Roy Campbell to remark that he was a "drunk."

Skowronski later attempted to kill Gene in the assembly plant, after hijacking Metal Gear RAXA and using its machineguns which killed several FOX agents. Though he missed his intended target, he was amazed by the weapon's sheer power. RAXA, however, shut itself down, due to its incompleteness as a prototype model. FOX member Ursula then threw Skowronski from the cockpit to his death, using her psychokinetic powers.

Behind the scenes[]

Skowronski is the only character on the San Hieronymo Peninsula to not be playable in any form in either Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops or its expansion pack, Portable Ops Plus. In fact, he also lacks an in-game 3D model, appearing only in the graphic novel cutscenes. Although spelled consistently throughout the main game's dialogue as "Skowronski," the end credits misspelled his name as "Scowronski."

Largely because of his only appearing in graphic novel cutscenes, specific aspects about him besides his most likely being Caucasian were never made clear in-game. However, concept art unveiled by CG World for their book Game Graphics 2008 revealed that he had blond hair, and his Soviet officer uniform was slightly dirty.[1]
