The Surround Indicator was a type of radar that detected sounds, alerting the user to what could possibly be a nearby enemy. The indicator flashed blue to red as the user got closer to the sounds source. It also indicated which direction the sound was coming from, as well as determine where an enemy sentry might be located.

Peace Walker Incident

Main article: Peace Walker Incident

Big Boss, as well as his Militaires Sans Frontières, made use of the device during the Peace Walker Incident in Costa Rica, in particular when engaging enemy choppers and Chrysalis.[1] When upgraded in R&D, red squares indicated any enemies that were near the operative, providing the exact enemy locations in the immediate area. Several MSF personnel likewise suggested that they use the Surround Indicator to locate any attack choppers, especially within the Catarata de la Muerte area, because of the trees obstructing a clear view and location of the Hind A.

Behind the scenes

The Surround Indicator is a device that is first introduced in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. It was created specifically to tailor to the PlayStation Portable's gameplay needs.[2] As such, it is always displayed in the top right part of the screen. In the expansion pack Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, the Surround Indicator is used in a similar manner, but also utilizes symbols to show the approximate locations of enemies or access points: a triangle facing upward indicating that the soldier/AP is above the player; a square indicating that they are on the same level; and a down-facing triangle indicating that they are below the player. It is also needed to find the exit in the latter game's Infinity Mission mode.

In Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the Surround Indicator is a selectable item that can be utilized by Mother Base's R&D Team and improved upon. The two respective models of the Surround Indicator are based on their appearances/usage in Portable Ops and Portable Ops Plus.
