Riot gun/shotgun/RGM-40[]

A riot gun is any weapon that fires non-lethal ammo for the purpose of controlling riots, including shotguns. The MGS4 Database actually lists it as a type of shotgun, and it is shown to fire shot pellets in-game. It will kill Snake in-game, but ammo designed for riot suppression can still kill; this is also the case with the gas grenades in MG2.

I am not familiar with the RGM-40's ammo type, but if it is designed for launching slugs/grenades, then it would not appear to match Shotmaker's weapon. The manual image may just be the artist's interpretation (looks like an RPG launcher), but it would be interesting to find the matching real-life weapon, assuming it isn't the RGM-40. --

Here's an image of the weapon:

And here's the group picture of the Outer Heaven mercs:

Pay in attention in particular to the gun that the soldier third from the right (Shotmaker) is holding, and you'll notice at least some similarities.

There may be some similarities in appearance, but the RGM-40 doesn't appear to be the weapon Shotmaker uses in the game, due to the ammo type. It does look an awful lot like an RPG launcher, so maybe the artist wasn't given sufficient info on the weapon. An additional note should be mentioned on this in the article. --Bluerock 13:35, December 2, 2011 (UTC)
Okay. I will tell you that I tried cross-referencing all riot guns and trying to match it up with what was shown on the Outer Heaven mercenaries picture, but the other guns usually didn't come very close to the picture outside of the "Kastet." I also recently looked up Riot Shotgun on wikipedia, and it didn't offer promising details on its identity, either. Weedle McHairybug 14:56, December 2, 2011 (UTC)
It could always be a fictional riot gun. The developers probably weren't overly concerned about realistic weaponry this early in the series. --Bluerock 15:44, December 2, 2011 (UTC)
However, weren't grenade launchers (like the M79) able to use large buckshot shells as a kind of alternate ammunition? If so, then maybe Shotmaker's hypothetical RGM-40 could maybe be loaded with rubber buckshot? It certainly sounds like a fearsome weapon to deal with escaping prisoners...
