A trash can, also known as a garbage can, garbage pail, trash bin, or dumpster, is a container used for storing trash for disposal. As some of their names imply, they commonly appear as pails or large drum cans, although they can also be prism-shaped.

Main article: Ground Zeroes Incident

On March 16, 1975, the personnel at the United States Naval Prison Facility in Cuba tried to dispose of an incriminating cassette tape that exposed what was going on at the base regarding it being a black site, also arranging for a garbage truck to pick it up. However, Big Boss, the commander of the Militaires Sans Frontières, who had infiltrated the base to rescue Chico and Paz Ortega Andrade, intercepted the tape before it could be taken by the garbage truck upon learning of its existence.

In 2014, Solid Snake, while undergoing his missions against Liquid Ocelot during the latter's insurrection against the Patriots, made use of dumpster-type trash cans to evade enemy patrols in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In the former instance, he relayed the contents to Otacon, including leftovers from the previous night as well as various roaches on his face, much to Otacon's disgust. When questioned about whether he had any reservations about it, Snake admitted that he'd hide in a toilet if it acted as an effective hiding spot.

Behind the scenes

The gameplay mechanic for hiding in dumpsters were introduced in Metal Gear Solid 4. Depending on whether you called Otacon before or after he pointed out a dumpster to hide in, Otacon's exchange with Snake at the beginning of the Codec call relating to it will vary.

It later made a return in Metal Gear Solid V, with the addition of peeking up briefly to fire a gun at a soldier and/or performing CQC on them.
