The VOL-GA K12 was a general purpose machine gun often seen in Eastern Bloc countries that saw use since at least the 1980s.
Background and features
The VOL-GA K12 was originally intended to be an anti-air turret, but has since been repurposed for use as an anti-personnel turret and outpost defense.
The Red Army in Afghanistan utilized the VOL-GA K12 for outpost defense in their various outposts and guardposts dotted throughout the Northern Kabul region. Venom Snake and the Diamond Dogs often stole these weapons during their operations in the region. Aside from the stationary manned turrets, the VOL-GA K12 also acted as the secondary weapons system for the TT77 NOSOROG battle tanks belonging to the Soviets. In addition, both Diamond Dogs themselves and several rival outfits modeled after them had VOL-GA K12s as well as their Western-based counterparts, the HMG-3 Wingate, dotting their Forward Operating Bases (and in the case of Diamond Dogs, their own primary base of operations).
Behind the scenes
The VOL-GA K12 first appeared in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
